V-ring

Our company supports the custom manufacturing of special-shaped seals made from fluororubber/perfluoroelastomer, such as V-rings. A V-ring is a ring-shaped elastic sealing element with a cross-section that resembles a “V” shape (or a multi-lip V-shape). Typically, it is composed of multiple layers of V-shaped rubber membranes combined with a metal skeleton (or an elastic support ring). Its key features are “multi-lip self-sealing capability plus high pressure resistance,” making it specially designed for dynamic sealing applications involving reciprocating and rotary motions.

Product Details

Product Description
• Structural composition: The basic structure is a “single-layer V-shaped rubber ring,” while the advanced structure features a “multi-layer V-shaped composite ring” (2 to 5 layers of V-shaped membranes stacked together, with a support ring sandwiched in between). Some high-end models are equipped with guide rings (such as PTFE guide rings) to prevent uneven wear of the seal. The number of lip seals ranges from 1 to 3 (single-lip, double-lip, and triple-lip designs); the double-lip or triple-lip configuration can achieve a triple-functionality of “primary sealing + auxiliary sealing + dust prevention.”
• Materials and Performance: The rubber lip seals commonly use polyurethane (PU, with excellent wear resistance and a dynamic coefficient of friction ≤ 0.3), HNBR (oil-resistant and aging-resistant, suitable for hydraulic systems), and FKM (high-temperature resistant and highly chemical-corrosion resistant, used in chemical equipment). The support rings are made of spring steel, stainless steel, or elastic rubber to ensure that the lip seal always maintains tight contact with the sealing surface. The temperature range is from -40℃ to 200℃; the reciprocating speed is ≤ 1 m/s, the rotational speed is ≤ 5 m/s, and the maximum pressure resistance is ≤ 35 MPa.
• Compatible scenarios: Primarily used for piston rod/piston seals in hydraulic cylinders and pneumatic cylinders (reciprocating dynamic seals), as well as rotary seals for rotating shafts (such as pump shafts and motor shafts). It is suitable for sealing surfaces with diameters ranging from φ10mm to φ1000mm and can replace conventional Y-rings and U-rings, offering higher sealing reliability.

Function
• Core features: In reciprocating or rotary motion, it prevents leakage of media such as hydraulic oil and compressed air while also blocking external dust and impurities from entering the sealing cavity. The dynamic leakage rate is ≤5×10⁻⁷ cm³/s (compliant with ISO 6020-2 dynamic sealing standards).
• Extended features: The self-tightening action of the lip seal compensates for wear on the seal (after wear, the support ring pushes the lip to maintain continuous contact), extending its service life to over 5 million reciprocating cycles. Some V-shaped seals can accommodate eccentric motion (such as slight eccentricity of the piston rod), thereby preventing seal failure caused by uneven wear.

Sealing mechanism
Based on the principle of “multi-lip self-tightening + dynamic fit”:
• During installation, under the preload of the support ring (or spring), the lip of the V-ring establishes initial contact pressure with the sealing surface (the piston rod/piston outer diameter or the cylinder bore inner surface). Once the medium is introduced into the system, the medium pressure enters the V-shaped groove, causing the lip to expand toward the sealing surface and increasing the contact pressure (a self-tightening effect). The higher the pressure, the tighter the lip conforms to the sealing surface, thereby achieving “pressure-adaptive sealing.”
• During reciprocating motion, the wear-resistant lip material forms a “low-friction contact” with the sealing surface. Meanwhile, the microstructure of the lip (such as surface lubrication grooves) can store grease, thereby reducing friction and wear. In the double-lip design, the primary lip is responsible for sealing the medium, while the secondary lip provides dust protection, creating a “dual protective barrier.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Image name

What are the differences between perfluoroelastomer rubber, fluororubber, and fluorosilicone rubber?

Image name

Perfluoroether rubber, fluoroelastomer, and fluorosilicone rubber are all high-performance sealing materials, yet each has its own unique characteristics. Perfluoroether rubber boasts exceptional chemical resistance and high-temperature tolerance, enabling it to withstand extreme chemical environments and elevated temperatures, making it ideal for demanding industrial applications. Fluoroelastomer excels in oil resistance, heat resistance, and weatherability, and is widely used in industries such as automotive and aerospace. Fluorosilicone rubber combines the chemical resistance of fluoroelastomer with the high- and low-temperature resistance of silicone rubber, making it well-suited for applications that require both thermal stability and chemical resistance. These three materials differ in chemical structure, performance, and application scenarios; when selecting one, it’s essential to consider specific requirements.
